Kolkata : The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will start an audit of spectrum available with the service providers in the next three to four months to find out how efficiently it is being used by them, the telcom watchdog’s chief said Tuesday.
“We want to find out how efficiently the mobile operators are making use of the spectrum available with them,” TRAI chairman J.S. Sarma told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of the Bharat Chamber of Commerce.
Addressing the members of the chamber, Sarma said the operators could do a lot more with the available spectrum.
On the amounts paid by the operators for 3G spectrum, Sarma said the bids were “appropriate”.
He exuded confidence that the much-awaited Mobile Number Portability would come into force by September.
“I have been given to understand by the government that it would be implemented by September and I expect the mobile operators to achieve that,” he said.
However, the TRAI would conduct a review within a week of the operators’ readiness to implement number portability.
He said: “We can recommend any action if there is any further delay in implementation of number portability though the authority to take such action rests with the government which has given out licences”.
