Kozhikode: The Students Islamic Organisation asked the student organisations of Kerala to abandon their feudal culture and function democratically. The office-bearers of the organization said that the secular student organisations, which accuse organisations that function according to religious ideals as communal, are creating communalism and factionalism in the campus. They were speaking in a press conference organized as part of the Kerala Campus Caravan in Kozhikode.
The attitude of the Kerala Students Union, Muslim Students Federation and Students Federation of India that they alone should be there in the campuses where they have influence is anti-democratic. The SFI and the MSF had tried to attack the Campus Caravan in some campuses, the office-bearers accused. Violent politics and criminal activities in campus will strengthen apolitical moves. What is needed is an abandonment of criminal methods and embracing creative politics, said PM Salih, state president.
The caravan was attacked by the SFI near Brannan College, Thalassery in Kannur district on Wednesday. SFI activists reportedly created trouble when the caravan was welcomed in Thalassery. The tense situation that followed was brought under control after the police came. The SIO activists then organized a public meeting in the city in protest against the attack.
The Kerala Campus Caravan of the SIO was inaugurated by national president KK Suhail in Kasargode on June 21. The caravan is organized as part of the state conference of the organization in December. Jamat e Islami state Amir T Arifali handed over the flag to the march captain state president PM Salih. “Campus manifesto for a new ‘we’” is the slogan of the march. The caravan has covered Kasargode, Kannur, Wynadu and Kozhikode districts and has reached Malappuram.
The caravan aims at disclosing secular terrorism, lining up students for a democratic campus, supporting the new age student politics, spreading service culture in students, call for academic improvement, etc. The caravan will be welcomed in all the universities and campuses in the state. A street play named ‘Kerala Campus Café’ is being played. Social activists and SIO presidents in different states will attend the public conferences in big cities organized as part of the caravan. A public conference will be held in the Gandhi Park in Thiruvananthapuram on July 6 when the caravan ends. Senior leaders of the Jamat e Islami and Solidarity as well as other important personalities will participate in the programme.
