UN Secretary-General to visit flood-hit Pakistan on Saturday

Islamabad : United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, arrives in Islamabad on Saturday to visit the flood-hit areas, the state-run television reported on Friday.

PTV reported that the UN Secretary-General will assess losses due to the worst floods in Pakistan in 80 years.

The United Nations appealed on Wednesday for nearly $460 million in emergency aid for victims of the devastating floods in Pakistan.

UN Humanitarian Chief John Holmes said the money is needed to help more than 14 million people affected by the flooding during the next 90 days.

President Asif Ali Zardari has welcomed the visit of the UN Secretary General and said that he is happy that he is visiting Pakistan when the nation is facing the worst floods in the country’s history.

The UN and Pakistani officials say that floods have killed some 1,600 people and displaced nearly 20 million others.

Pakistani Prime Minister said that the devastated floods have taken the country 50 years back.

Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, John Kerry, will also visit Pakistan on August 18 to review the flood losses and damages, officials said.
