New Delhi : India’s National Solar Mission will aggressively target decreasing the cost of solar power, a renewable energy ministry official said here Wednesday.
“Capacity addition targets and policy instruments under the National Solar Mission have been structured to capitalise on and to push-for aggressive cost reduction in solar energy systems in the coming years,” said B. Bhargava, director with the ministry of new and renewable energy, at a workshop on solar power plants organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
He said that the phase 1 of the mission will be quite critical as a mode for learning the ropes in implementing in increasing, which will be applied to the next two phases.
Under phase 1, only 5 percent of the total target was been released, while phase 2 has target of 3,000-4,000 megawatt of grid-connected solar power generation.
“It (second phase) could be up scaled if cost reduction in solar energy technologies takes place at an early stage,” said Bhargava.
The chairman of state-run Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency, Debashish Majumdar also said that the National Solar Mission was creating a large amount of opportunities for the stakeholders in the sector.
“However, to capitalise on these opportunities one needs information and knowledge and therefore it is extremely important to build capacity in the sector,” said Majumdar.
