Malappuram district SP K Sethuraman banned the march based on the report of the Crime Branch DySP that the march may lead to communal tensions as there are nearly 12 mosques on the way. BJP leaders reportedly said that the party would go on with the march despite the police order.

The BJP state president announced the march in a press conference held at Malappuram on August 21. He accused the government of not being sincere in clamping down on the PFI. He said that the CPI (M) should demand a ban on the PFI if it was sincere. The march would be organized by the BJP demanding ‘a closure of all terror centres and banning of terrorist organisations’. State leaders of the party such as KP Sreeshan, Shobha Surendran, PM Velayudhan, KK Surendran and K Janchandran were said to lead the march which would begin at 10 am from Manjeri town.

The Green Valley is the first centre of the PFI and its former organization the NDF (National Development Front). The campus, situated outside Manjeri town, includes a masjid, a centre of the School of Islamic Studies (for learning and research of Qur’an and Hadith), etc. The campus had an industrial training centre. It also arranged for masons, goldsmiths, and cobblers etc to train the poor in their respective works.
