CWG: Indian men shoot gold, women archers bronze

New Delhi : Shooters Vijay Kumar and Gurpreet Singh bagged the first gold of the day and women won the first ever archery medal at the Commonwealth Games Thursday, taking India’s gold tally to 12 and overall medal kitty to 25.

India also moved into the semi-final of the badminton mixed team event, blanking Canada 3-0.

Vijay Kumar and Gurpeet Singh’s gold came in the 25-metre pistol pairs event on the fourth day of the competitions. Kumar scored 587 and Singh 575 for a total of 1162 and take home the gold.

The women’s team of Bheigyabati Chanu, Jhano Hansdah and Gagandeep Kaur bagged the bronze in the compound team event of archery, beating Malaysia 223-217.

Australia continued to lead the medals table with 22 gold. They have 17 silver and 10 bronze to India’s eight silver and five bronze. Engalnd remained third with seven gold, eleven silver and nine bronze.

The badminton team of Jwala Gutta and V.Diju defeated Grace Gao and NG Toby 21-8, 21-12; Chetan Anand overcame David Snider 21-18, 21-17, and Saina Nehwal beat Anna Rice 21-16, 21-13, for the semi-final spot.

Suman Kundu and Geeta Kumari won their matches in freestyle wrestling on a day when 35 golds are to be decided.

Women wrestling is making debut at the Commonwealth Games with events in 48kg, 55kg, 63kg and 72kg both in freestyle and Greco-Roman category.

Indians are also featuring in boxing, weightlifting, tennis, table tennis and squash Thursday.

In boxing, the stars in action will be Akhil Kumar (56kg), Suranjoy Singh (52kg) and Manoj Kumar (64kg).

Weightlifting medal prospect Sudhir Kumar will be competing in the 77kg category.
