Mumbai: The Citizens For Justice and Peace has welcomed the Supreme Court order lifting ban on the pronouncement of verdict in Godhra carnage and riot cases of Gujarat pogrom 2002 except the Gulbarg Society massacre case.
“The Citizens for Justice and Peace welcomes the prospects of acknowledgement and justice for the victim survivors of the Godhra and post Godhra massacres of the carnage in Gujarat in 2002. While over 66 accused in the Godhra mass arson case have been in jail without bail for close to nine years, eighty per cent of the accused in the post Godhra massacres were granted bail within months of the violence,” the NGO said.
Over 500 accused face the prospects of conviction in the post Godhra massacres, an unprecedented first for trials in communal crimes. Of these ministers, MLA s and policemen also face the threat of conviction.
The SC order came earlier this week on the petition by Godhra accused languishing in jail. They had pleaded the apex court to lift its ban on pronouncement of verdict by the trial court in the Godhra case.
“The CJP is hopeful that gross failures and lapses in investigation even by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team are incorporated into charge sheets before the trials are brought to their conclusion.”
