New Delhi: With an eye on joining elite nuclear clubs like the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), India Tuesday underlined its strong commitment to non-proliferation, an issue that will figure during the forthcoming visit of US President Barack Obama.
“We are in practical adherence to the NSG standards,” National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon said here days before Obama comes on a four-day visit to India starting Nov 6.
“We share a common vision of a nuclear weapons-free world. We have a strong commitment to non-proliferation,” Menon said.
Menon spoke about India “having a much higher level of ambition”, in its relationship with the US amid expectations that America will announce the relaxation of restrictions on high technology exports.
Besides the NSG, India is keen to join the world’s non-proliferation regimes like Wassenaar Arrangement and Australia Group that will give it greater access to advanced dual use technologies.
Issues relating to non-proliferation, high-tech exports and the India-US nuclear deal will figure prominently in discussions between Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here Nov 8.
The US may convey its support to India for joining the NSG, said informed sources.
