“This calendar year, private equity deals have risen to between Rs.23,000 to Rs.24,000 crore than last year’s Rs.14,000 crore,” said Utsav Parekh, chairman, Smifs Capital Markets Limited.

“The total market capitalisation in India as of date is worth Rs.70,00,000 crore,” said Parekh at the second national conference for leadership organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries.

“This calendar year the total investment in the capital market is about $28 billion,” said T.R. Prashanth Kumar, managing director and CEO of Bank of Baroda Capital Markets Limited.

Noting only 1.2 percent people in India participate actively in the stock market, he said: “There are few individual investors in the market as the rural penetration of banking is less than 18 percent and also till now we have mainly concentrated on the metropolitian cities for investment.”

“Capital market is an indicator in the level of economic development of a nation and new sets of investors along with old ones helps in increasing the capital market,” he said.
