By DPA,
Baghdad : US Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Baghdad on a surprise visit Thursday for talks with leaders of the new Iraqi government, Iraqi television announced.
Biden is scheduled to meet Premier Nuri al-Maliki and President Jalal al-Talabani for talks on US troops in the country and their withdrawal, which is scheduled at the end of the year.
Biden’s previously unannounced visit is the first by a high-ranking US official since Iraq created a new government last month, ending months of political deadlock.
There are currently around 50,000 US troops in Iraq, the lowest level since the US invasion in 2003.
