Kolkata : Heavy fog threw air services out of gear at the international airport here Friday as 40 flights failed to take off while train schedules were also disrupted, officials said.
The visibility at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport was very low at less than 50 metres in the morning, an airport official said.
Forty flights did not take off and 13 could not land due to the dense fog. A large number of passengers had to wait for hours at the airport lounges before services could be resumed as the skies cleared later in the day, the official added.
The fog also hit train services. “Several long distance trains were running late,” an Eastern Railway official said. Services of South Eastern Railway that run along the east coast of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh were also hit.
The launch services on Hooghly river here were also disrupted in the morning fog.
