224 killed on Malaysian highways during Eid al-Fitr holiday period

Kuala Lumpur : A total of 224 people were killed in road accidents in Malaysia during the 15-day period before and after the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan which fell on Oct 13 this year.

Sixteen people died on the last day of a two-week operation launched by the authorities on Oct 7 to reduce road accidents and deaths during the holiday period when large numbers of Malaysians from the cities return to visit their families in the smaller towns and rural areas.

Of the 16 people reported killed on Sunday, Oct 21, 11 were motorcyclists or pillion riders, four were drivers of cars and one was a pedestrian, the head of the traffic police division at Federal Police headquarters here, Hamza Taib, said in a statement Monday.
