Sops for Minorities in the 2011-12 budget of Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: With an eye on the assembly elections due in 2012, the Uttar Pradesh government led by Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party announced some sops for the largest minority community in the tax-free deficit budget for the year 2011-12 presented in the Assembly on 8th Feb. The budget size is over Rs 1,69,416 crore but less than Rs 500 crore has been earmarked for the welfare of the minority.

The BSP government has set a target to benefit 36.25 lakh minority students under the Pre-10th and Post-10th Scholarship Scheme for the year 2011-2012. An amount of Rs. 294 crore has been earmarked for the purpose. An arrangement of Rs. 06 crore has been made for the reimbursement of fee for the students of post-10th classes. Besides, Rs. 50 crore has been earmarked for imparting modern education along with the religious education in Madrasas/Maktabs.

CM Mayawati has also allocated Rs 10 crore in the 2011-12 budget for the construction of the building of Uttar Pradesh Urdu, Arabic, Persian University in Lucknow.

Moreover, the state government has also announced some schemes for welfare of weavers in the state. During the financial year 2011-2012 the government will introduce Health Insurance Scheme for weavers. Besides, for modernization and integrated development of power-looms, a sum of Rs 2.17 crore has been provided in the budget.
