Kozhikode: The People’s Democratic Party has decided to launch strong agitation demanding justice for the party chairman Abdunnasir Maudany, who is presently in Karnataka jail in connection with the 2008 Bengaluru blasts. Announcement of the agitation was made yesterday at a public conference held yesterday at the Muthalakkulam Maidani in Kozhikode.
Memoranda will be submitted to all state and central ministers on February 23, as part of the first phase of the agitation. A cultural gathering will be organized in Thrissur on February 27 to gather the support of cultural leaders. Popular marches will be held to central government offices in all districts on 28th. In the second phase, state and central government offices will be besieged in three zones in Kozhikode, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram on March 14. Memoranda will be submitted to Karnataka ministers on March 21. In the third phase, popular march will be organized to Karnataka. The march will begin from Thiruvananthapuram on March 27.
The announcement of the agitation was made by party general secretary Varkkala Raj. Civil rights activist Gro Vasu inaugurated the conference. Working chairman Adv Akbar Ali presided over the function. Adv Muhammed Shareef, H Shaheer Moulavi, K Babu, Rajeev Shanker, Ajitkumar Azad, Sabu Kottarakkara, Thomas Manjooran, Veerankutty Ernakulam and Shameer Payyanangadi spoke. Zubair Sabahi welcomed and Muneer Vatakara delivered the vote of thanks.
Maudany was arrested from Kerala by the Karnataka police on August 17, 2010, for his alleged role in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blast. He was remanded to police custody for 10 days, and then to judicial custody which has been extended ever since. His bail application was rejected by lower courts against which he has appealed in the Karnataka High Court. He submitted the bail plea in December and the prosecution filed its counter-affidavit two days ago only. The hearing is supposed to begin today.
