New Delhi : The Election Commission has issued show-cause notices to Congress leader B.K. Hariprasad and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Gujarat unit president Purshottam Rupala for violating the model code of conduct after they reportedly traded charges using ‘un-parliamentary’ language in the assembly election campaign.
The two leaders have been asked to reply by Friday noon.
Hariprasad, a general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and in charge of the party affairs in Gujarat, had reportedly questioned the parentage of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a public rally in south Gujarat last week.
This led to retaliation from the Gujarat BJP president who reportedly abused Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s son Rahul Gandhi in a similar manner.
Both the leaders had come in for criticism from the media for taking the poll campaign to such a low level. The EC took cognisance of media reports and issued notice to the duo.
Gujarat will have elections Dec 11 and Dec 16. The model code of conduct came into force after the elections were announced on Oct 10.
