Raipur: Amid an uproar in the Chhattisgarh assembly for the second consecutive day Friday over charges that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had “sold” a dam to a private company, Speaker Dharamlal Kaushik announced a probe into the matter by a house panel.
The opposition Congress members raised slogans against BJP government as the house assembled for question hour and sought the resignation of Chief Minister Raman Singh and action against a top bureaucrat for allegedly selling a dam to Hyderabad-based KSK Energy Ventures Limited that is setting up a 3,600 MW coal-fired power plant in the state’s Janjgir-Champa district.
Amid charges and counter-charges among Congress and the BJP legislators on the issue, the speaker announced that a five-member house panel will probe the issue and will table the report by the next assembly session.
As the house assembled Friday, opposition members were on their feet, insisting that the 48-year-old Rogda dam area should be taken back from the KSK Energy Ventures Limited, which had been allotted land, including that of dam, for its upcoming power project.
With the announcement of crucial house committee probe, the deadlock in the state assembly finally ended with opposition Congress members allowing the house to transact normal business.
Raising the issue Thursday, Congress members asked the BJP “why it had sold out a dam” to a private company. The relentless protests had forced the speaker to adjourn the house for the day.
