Police said that unidentified gunmen shot dead Maulana Mehmood Ahmad Madni, elder brother of slain leader of banned extremist group ‘Sipah-e-Sahabi’ and his son in new Karachi late Saturday night.

A police officer said the gunmen opened fire on Madni’s car, killing him at the scene. His son, Abu Bakar, received critical bullet injuries and died in hospital of wounds, the officer added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police termed the incident as target and sectarian killing.

Police said preliminary investigation suggests that some unidentified man had called Maulana Madni on phone and when he and son were waiting in their car, gunmen riding three motorcycles fired at them. The gunmen fled after the incident.

Tension gripped the city and several armed men took to the street in New Karachi, North Nazimabad and Buffer Zone and forced the people to close down shops.

Paramilitary force and police started patrolling in the city to check any backlash.

Students of religious seminary and supporters of the banned group rushed to the hospital and chanted slogans against the police for failure to arrest the attackers.

Maulana Madni was hurt in an earlier attack in 2005 and his another son, Muhammad Abdullah was killed in that attack.
