Raipur : Om Prakash Rathor, the director general of Chhattisgarh Police for the last three years, died of a massive heart attack Monday afternoon while delivering a lecture at the state police academy.
The 58-year old 1973 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) official was the fifth chief of Chhattisgarh Police.
Rathor, a native of Himachal Pradesh, went to deliver a lecture Monday morning at the police academy on the outskirts of the capital city. During the function, he complained of uneasiness and fell unconscious, a senior police official said.
He was rushed to the Escorts Hospital, where all efforts to revive him failed, the official said.
The doctors, who attended on Rathor, said, "There was no pulse and heartbeat when he was admitted in the hospital. Despite employing all systems, the doctors failed to revive him." He was declared dead at 1.45 p.m., they added.
Rathor had served in many senior positions in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. He had a long tenure at the United Nations also. He took over as the director general of Chhattisgarh Police on July 15, 2004.
Rathor was credited with re-designing the strategy to combat Maoists and pulling them out of the forests. The strategy resulted in direct offensive action against the rebels. He was on top of the hit list of Maoists.
