Thiruvananthapuram : The population of Kerala increased 4.86 percent in the last decade from 31,838,618 to 33,387,677 and while its sex ratio, already the highest in the country, increased to 1,084, according to the Census 2011 data released here Friday.
According to the census, the population comprises 17,366,387 women and 16,021,290 men. The Muslim majority Malappuram district was the most populous district with a population of 4,110,956 (1,961,014 men and 2,149,942 women).
The state’s sex ratio (number of women per thousand men) increased from 1,058 to 1,084.
V.M. Gopala Menon, director, Census Directorate, said that every indicator is on expected lines and there is nothing which requires an urgent look into.
“These results are exactly on the same lines as of the Human Development Report that came out in 2009. The detailed analysis will be out by April 15,” he said.
Kerala’s literacy rate also grew 3.05 percent to touch 91.98 percent. Female literacy reached 91.98 percent and male literacy 96.02 percent.
Pathananamthitta district in central Kerala leads the 14 districts with the highest literacy rate with 96.93 percent.
Density of population also grew from 819 people per square km to 859. Thiruvananthapuram district topped the list with a population density of 1,509 while the hilly district of Idukki was the least crowded with just 254 people.
“The details of migration, education and other indicators will be released at a later date as they are being compiled,” said Menon.
