Thiruvananthapuram: The case against the police in the Beemapalli police firing incident should be probed again, directed the Thiruvananthapuram First Class Magistrate Court on Saturday. The case, which the Crime Branch had reportedly recommended to close down, will now again be probed by the Crime Branch DySP.
Magistrate AM Basheer gave the order when considering the petition submitted by Ishaq, relative of Hakeem who was killed in the firing. The Crime Branch had submitted a report on April 16 pointing out that the case could be written off, according to reports.
Six persons were killed and 39 others injured in the police firing that took place on May 17, 2009, at Cheriyathura beach near Beemapalli in Thiruvananthapuram. The firing was reportedly led by Assistant Commissioners E Sharafudheen and Suresh Kumar, along with CIs Pradeeep Kumar and KJ Jonson, against who the case was filed.
There were some clashes between the Muslims of Beemapalli and the Christians of Cheriathura in coastal Thiruvananthapuram, which were triggered by the acts of some goons in the area. The police took no action to control the criminals. But when clashes were intensified on 17th May, the police indiscriminately fired at the people, killing six. One of the seriously injured even had his leg cut off. Thiruvananthapuram District Judge K Ramakrishnan is in charge of the judicial probe into the incident and the report is yet to be submitted.
