Kozhikode: Hameed Vanimel, former political secretary of the Kerala unit of Jamat e Islami who recently left the organisation, joined the Muslim League. Mr Vanimel was given the membership of the party by the League state president Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal at a function held at the ‘Chandrika Auditorium’ in Kozhikode on Saturday.

Muslim League Kozhikode district president PKK Bava presided over the function which was attended by national president and central minister E Ahmed, state general secretary PK Kunjalikkutty, national secretary MP Abdussamad Samadani, secretary Dr MK Muneer, Siraj Ibrahim Sait, PV Abdul Vahab, MC Mayin Haji, TT Ismail, CVM Vanimel and Soopi Narikkatteri.

Earlier while announcing his joining of the Muslim League in a press conference, Mr Vanimel criticised the Jamat’s formation of political party as hypocritical. The leaders (of the Jamat) do not dare even to say the organisation’s name along with the party’s. This shows even they don’t believe in the mass base of the organisation. It cannot make any influence in the state-national politics. And hence, the party is not at all relevant. The Jamat which had organized secular campaigns against fascism invited BJP leader Jain to the party’s launch. This (formation of the party) aims at weakening the organized power of minority. The Muslim League is the only party which can be the organized power of minority in Kerala, he added.

Mr Vanimel had served as the political secretary of the Kerala unit of the Jamat e Islami for quite some years during which time the organisation-backed local alliances contested in the Panchayat elections held last year. He left the organisation recently, protesting against the JIH decision to support the LDF in the Assembly elections held on April 13. Mr Vanimel reportedly said that CPI (M) general secretary Pinarayi Vijayan had held talks with JIH Amir T Arifali regarding support in elections, which came up as a new controversy in Kerala politics as the CPI (M) had earlier branded the JIH as anti-democratic and terrorist. Though the JIH had not announced its election policy at the time of Mr Vanimel’s quitting, it later announced its support to the LDF in 124 constituencies. It supported the UDF in 15 constituencies and did not support anybody in one constituency.
