Kolkata: The Phase-3 election for new assembly in West Bengal will be held on 27th April. There are 75 constituencies covering 3 districts: North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Kolkata. In the 3rd phase 469 candidates are in the fray — Among them 64 are Muslim candidates including 2 Muslim women, all from Trinamool Congress.
Abdus Sattar, Minority Affairs & Madrasa Education Minister of State
Among the Muslim candidates, Left Front has fielded more than any party – CPI-M has fielded 10 and AIFB 2. But there is no Muslim woman. All India Trinamul Congress has fielded 10 Muslim candidates including 2 women. There are just two Muslim candidates from Congress, three from BJP, two from Janata Dal (United), five from Siddiqullah Choudhary-led PDCI, one from SDPI, three from Muslim League (Kerala State Committee).
Abdur Rejjak Molla, Land & Land Reform Minister
The Phase-3 is crucial as three Muslim ministers of Left Front Government are also contesting. Land & Land Reform Minister Abdur Rejjak Molla is contesting from Canning East, Minority Affairs & Madrasa Education Minister of State Abus sattar from Amdanga and Agriculture, Marketing & Relief Minister of State Dr Mortaza Hossain form Deganga. In Deganga Dr Mortaza Hossain is facing rival Dr Nuruzzaman of All India Trinamul Congress. Dr Nuruzzaman is son of Ex Minister of State of West Bengal Late AKM Hassanuzzaman who was elected from Muslim League.
Mumtaz Begum, TMC candidate, Metiabruj Assembly seat, South 24 Pargana
Trinamul leader of Kolkata Jawed Ahmed Khan who was MLA in Ballygunge constituency is now contesting in Kasba constituency. In Ballygunge, Dr Fuad Halim of CPI-M is contesting TMC Leader Subrata Mukherjee. Dr Fuad Halim is son of Hashim Abdul Halim, Speaker of West Bengal Assembly.

Abdur Rejjak Molla has won his seat since 1972 while this is the second time for Abdur Sattar and Dr Mortaja Hossain.

A total of 11 MLAs are contesting in Phase-3 including three ministers. Two MLAs are not contesting in this election — Mr Morsalin Molla (MLA from Maheshtala) and Speaker of West Bengal Assembly Hashim Abdul Halim (MLA from Entally). Among 11 MLAs only Mr Abdul Khaleque Molla of Congress was expelled from party and he is contesting as Independent candidate from Metiaburuj constituency and JD (U) MLA Md Sohrab is contesting from Jorashanko constituency of Kolkata.
Of 75, 7 constituencies are heavily Muslim-dominated with at least 60 percent or more population. These constituencies are Baruria, Basirhat Uttar, Deganga, Haroa, Bhangor, Canning East, and Metiaburuj. Beside this, Amdanga, Magrahat West and Kolkata Port have above 50 percent Muslim population. Nine constituencies are having above 40 percent Muslim population including some seats reserved for SCs.
