Additional Sessions Judge H.M. Dholakia also sentenced three others to three years’ imprisonment for having “gang raped” two minor girls.

The judge, however, acquitted 29 other accused in a massacre that occurred on March 3 that year. The ghastly incident happened in Eral village in Panchmahal district in central Gujarat.

The police had filed three charge-sheets in the case on the complaint of Madinabibi Sheikh, who was an eye-witness.

Incidentally, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party won all the 13 assembly seats in the district in the 2002 elections.
