Tunis : A nephew of former Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has been sentenced to two years in prison by a court in the capital on charges of drug abuse, the official TAP news agency reported.
Imed Trabelsi is the nephew of Ben Ali’s wife. The 37-year-old businessman was also fined 2,000 dinars (about $2,650), said Xinhua.
Trabelsi first appeared in court in April, but the hearing was delayed as tension flared in the courtroom as many people attending the trial called for his conviction.
A few years ago, he was sentenced by a French court for stealing a luxurious yacht from a French port. However, after the case was handed over to a Tunisian judge, Trabelsi was released and the yacht returned to its owner.
