Perhaps this is the first time that Muslim MLAs will cross the mark of 50 in one assembly. The new West Bengal Assembly will have 59 Muslim Members. The results for the 2011 assembly poll held last month and earlier this month were announced today. In 2006 assembly poll, 46 Muslim candidates were elected to the assembly.
The state, which was under the rule of communists over three decades, will see Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Congress forming a coalition government. In the 294-seat, Trinamool will have 184 Members while Congress 42 Members. The ruling Left front has been reduced to around 50 seats.
