Cairo : Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak said Tuesday he will apologise to his country for violently suppressing an anti-government uprising at the beginning of the year, the al-Shorouk daily said.
The paper said Mubarak was “drafting a letter which will be shown on Egyptian and Arabic channels, apologising on behalf of himself and his family for any offence caused to the people”.
The ousted leader will also beg for pardon “for any behaviour that may have stemmed from false information passed to him by his advisers”.
The paper quoted Arab and Egyptian official sources as saying that Mubarak is also going to transfer his foreign assets into the country.
Mubarak, 83, resigned Feb 11 following an 18-day uprising that resulted in the deaths of more than 800 people.
The military council that took power following Mubarak’s resignation has pledged to bring to justice all former regime officials found guilty of abusing power.
The former president and his wife are currently under arrest in a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after both of them suffered heart attacks during interrogation as part of a graft probe.
