Jalaun (Uttar Pradesh): The death of a minor girl, who was mowed down by a tanker here Saturday, sparked violence as a mob went on a rampage, damaging government vehicles and public property and fighting pitched battles with police,
Muskan, 8, was crushed to death by a private tanker in Ait area. Demanding the driver should be handed over to them, local residents indulged in heavy stone pelting, damaged several buses of the state-run transport corporation, and even tried to set the vehicles and government hoardings on fire.
“Even as we managed to nab the driver, the protesters wanted to take him in their custody. They turned unruly and blockaded a national highway after damaging a number of buses,” police inspector B.P. Yadav told reporters in Jalaun, some 250 km from Lucknow.
“The protesters even clashed with us when we tried to stop their demonstration. Thereafter, we had no option other than to resort to mild force for dispersing them. The situation is still tense, but under control,” he added.
In the wake of the series of violence, heavy security has been deployed in area and adjoining areas.
