Three LeT militants killed in Kashmir gunbattle

Srinagar : Three separatist guerrillas, including a top commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), were killed in an overnight gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town, police said Friday.

According to police, Rashtriya Rifles (RR) troops and police jointly surrounded Seer area of Sopore Thursday afternoon after getting information about the presence of a group of heavily armed separatist guerrillas.

“As the security forces were laying a cordon around the area, the militants opened fire, triggering a gunfight which ended this (Friday) morning,” a police officer said.

According to him, two guerrillas were gunned down Thursday evening while the third was killed early Friday. “The militants were holed up inside an under-construction house in the area.”

A top LeT commander, Abdullah Babar, who is also a foreigner, was also killed in the gunfight, police said.

Police recovered three AK-47 rifles and seven magazines from the slain guerrillas.

Security forces had gunned down two LeT guerrillas in Sopore town last week as well.
