Sensex continues to trade volatile

Mumbai : A benchmark index for Indian equities markets continued to trade volatile Tuesday afternoon, while broader market indices held on to moderate gains. Capital goods and healthcare stocks were among the major gainers.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,276.78 points, was ruling at 18,289.73 points, up 23.7 points or 0.13 percent from its previous close at 18,266.03 points.

The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also trading in the green at 5,496.6 points, up 0.25 percent.

Broader markets were trading with moderate gains, with the BSE midcap index up 0.48 percent and the BSE smallcap index up 0.32 percent.

The market breadth was positive with 1,544 stocks advancing, 1,175 on the decline and 128 remaining unchanged.

Among the gainers on the Sensex were Reliance Infra, Bajaj Auto, Tata Power and M&M, while losers included Tata Motors, Hindalco, HDFC and RIL.

Global markets were ruling dull with traders cautious after US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke said Tuesday that the US economic recovery had slowed in recent weeks.

The Nikkei of the Japanese stock exchange closed 1.05 percent lower at 9,547.79 points, while the Hang Seng of the Hong Kong stock exchange ended flat at 22,496 points.

The Chinese Shanghai composite index moved up 1.1 percent to close at 2,730.04 points.

European markets were trading in the green.
