Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has vowed to defend democracy in the country.
Addressing a gathering in Naudero in Sindh province Tuesday, marking the 58th birth anniversary of his wife, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Zardari said that if any “political actors” tried to weaken democracy, the Pakistan Peoples Party would frustrate their designs.
Zardari said the party’s approach is to strengthen the institutions whether they are of armed forces, judiciary, political institutions or even media, Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
He urged “political actors to stop their negative propaganda against institutions”.
The president said the country was playing the role of a frontline state in the war against terrorism.
“We are sacrificing our sons and daughters for the sake of the country,” he was quoted as saying.
