China, US announce military exchange plans

Beijing : China and the US Monday announced their military exchange plans for the year that include joint drills and visits by senior officers to each others’ establishments.

The announcement was made after talks in Beijing between the Chief of General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Gen. Chen Bingde, and the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen.

The commander of a military region of the PLA will visit the headquarters of the US Pacific Command in the third quarter of this year, while US Pacific Command chief will visit China before the end of the year, Xinhua reported.

Hospital ships of the two navies will conduct exchanges and carry out joint medical and rescue drills.

The military band of the US army will also visit China in the fourth quarter. The two armed forces will conduct joint drills on humanitarian rescue and disaster relief in the third quarter of 2012.
