Chennai: AIADMK General Secretary and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has deputed two members of parliament from her party to express solidarity with her Gujarat counterpart, Narendra Modi, who goes on a three-day fast Saturday to strengthen social harmony.

“The party leadership has decided to depute two MPs, V. Maitreyan and M. Thambidurai, to mark their presence at Modi’s fast on Saturday,” a senior party leader told IANS.

Modi had earlier announced the launching of a ‘Sadbhavana mission’ to strengthen social harmony and brotherhood and resolved to fast for three days in Ahmedabad from Sep 17.

Political observers say it is too early to read any political meaning as both the chief ministers are on good terms.

However, the gesture is important as the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress are set to fight assembly elections next year in Uttar Pradesh — the big battle before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

As a special invitee, Modi attended the swearing-in ceremony of Jayalalithaa as chief minister this May.
