‘Lawyers have a role in nation building’

Jammu : Emphasizing the need for bringing excellence in imparting legal, technical and professional education in the State, Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad Tuesday called upon the concerned in the field to nurture talented professionals to compete in the advanced global scenario.
Addressing annual day function of Dogra Law College at Bari-Brahamna near here, Chief Minister said “it is a matter of great pride that this institution was the first to introduce 5-year integrated law course in the State in which boys and girls from all parts of Jammu and Kashmir are pursuing education”. The conducive environment in the college, he said, provided greater opportunities to students to understand each other and know about the diverse culture and heritage of the State. “Studentship is the best period for fostering a good understanding among each other”, he said.
Referring to the law course, Chief Minister said “it is an important stream and has become the first choice of brilliant students”. Recalling the role of top lawyers of yester-years including Mahatma Gandhi and Pt. Moti Lal Nehru in the freedom struggle of the country, he said “the lawyers’ fraternity has a pivotal role in nation building”. He impressed upon the lawyers and students to help poorer sections of the society in seeking justice.
Wishing bright future to the students of the college, Chief Minister said that he would like many of them to join political field too. He said the State has given many law luminaries and a son of soil has the distinction of becoming Chief Justice of India.
The Chief Minister also released the college magazine ‘Nyaya’ brought out on the occasion and distributed prizes among the students who have excelled in various academics and extra-curricular activities.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Hameed Karra said that he was delighted to address the fraternity to which he himself belongs. He said “lawyers and law students have a great role in the development of the society”.
Karra expressed happiness that law stream was becoming a first choice of the students and complimented the management of Dogra Law College for having started 5-year integrated law course.
Minister for R&B Mr. Gulchain Singh Charak, who is also the Chairman Dogra Educational Trust, lauded the untiring initiatives of Mr. Azad for raising massive public service infrastructure and ensuring speedier socio-economic development across the State.
Charak also dwelt on the growth of the Dogra Educational Trust and the law college runs by it.
Vice Chancellor Jammu University Prof. Amitabh Mattoo said “the legal education has acquired a new meaning and importance in the present day world and best students are pursuing legal profession”. He said with the availability of best law colleges in the State and the country quality education had become easily available.
Director-cum-Principal of the college Prof. G. Varandani presented annual report of the institution highlighting its achievements in various fields.
Secretary Dogra Educational Trust Samar Dev Singh presented vote of thanks.
A cultural programme based on the theme of composite heritage of the State was presented by the college students, which was highly appreciated by the audience.
Among those present on the occasion were MLA Mr. Ashwani Sharma, former MLA Bharat Gandhi, Maj. Gen. (Retd) G. S. Jamwal, District Development Commissioner Samba Mr. B. S. Jamwal, faculty members, students and prominent citizens.
