The constable was battling for life at the Sher-e-Kashmir Medical Institute (Soura).

Hundreds of devotees throng the Hazratbal shrine on the banks of the Dal Lake for Friday prayers every week.

“The bus stop was crowded when we heard the shots. Everybody ran for cover since nobody knew what had happened,” an eyewitness said.

After the incident, many shops were shut in the area. No militant group has so far taken responsibility for the attack.
