Jammu : The Jammu and Kashmir government’s annual ‘durbar move’ took place Wednesday with its offices shifting to winter capital Jammu amid tight security and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah taking salute at a guard of honour.
Jammu and Kashmir has two capital cities – Srinagar, where the government resides from May to October, and Jammu, where it operates from during the winter months of November to April-end. It is more than a century-old practice, started by the Dogra kings.
Extraordinary security measures were taken because of the call of protests by various student organisations against the new recruitment policy of the state government.
According to the policy, new recruits would get 50 percent of their basic salary for the first two years, followed by 75 percent in the next three years and confirmation would only be after completion of five years of service.
Jammu Deputy Commissioner Sanjeev Verma ordered that all colleges be closed for Wednesday. “We have our own reasons to do so, for us security is the most important thing,” he told reporters.
He has also imposed restrictions on processions around the secretariat for two months.
