A senior police officer said the attack came outside Sagar’s ancestral home in the old city’s Nawa Bazaar area.

“Three people including two policemen and a civilian were injured in the attack. One of the injured policemen identified as constable Gulzar Ahmad succumbed to injuries while being shifted to the hospital for treatment.”

“The minister was inside his ancestral home when the militants fired at his escort vehicle which was parked outside,” the officer said.

Reports said the minister had just entered his home when the attack took place.

Police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) reinforcements were rushed to the spot to escort the minister back to his official residence in the uptown area.

This is the first such attack by the separatist guerrillas in the heart of Srinagar and comes at a time when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been advocating revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Srinagar city.
