Jaipur : A court here is expected to decide Thursday on issuing a non-bailable warrant against Orissa's senior police official B.B. Mohanty, who faces the charge of helping his son, a rape convict, escape from a Rajasthan jail.
"We approached the court Tuesday for a non-bailable warrant. The court heard our arguments today," V.K. Singh, superintendent of police (Jaipur east), told IANS here Wednesday.
"Our team is ready to go to Orissa after we get court orders," he said.
Mohanty, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and director general of police in Orissa, has been charged by the Rajasthan police with helping and abetting his son Bitti's escape from jail and harbouring him.
If found guilty, he can face a term of between one and a half years to life imprisonment.
Mohanty was earlier directed by the Supreme Court to surrender before the court here.
Bitti was convicted of raping a 26-year-old German tourist in Alwar in March 2006 and was sentenced to seven years in jail. He was allowed a 15-day parole to meet his ailing mother on Nov 20. But he jumped it and did not return.
A surety bond worth Rs.50,000 for the parole was given by his father who has however denied having stood surety and says he has no information about Bitti.
