Members of the Gujjar and Meo communities clashed in Bharatpur district Sep 14 last year over a piece of land, which one group claimed was for a burial centre and the other said was for a pond. Ten people were killed while at least 20 others were injured in the violence.

CBI sources said that members from both the communities have been made accused in the chargesheet.

The accused have been charged with sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (preventing public servant from discharging of his duties) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.

“The chargesheet was filed in a special CBI court in Jaipur. It has been mentioned in the chargesheet that investigation against several others is going on and chargesheet against them will be filed later,” a source in the CBI told IANS.

The violence had snowballed into a political agenda before the Uttar Pradesh elections as the minority community accused the Congress party of being insensitive towards Muslims.

Some of the groups had threatened to damage the Congress’ prospects in the Uttar Pradesh polls.

Groups like Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind condemned the violence and demanded strict action against the officers and also members of the Gujjar community.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and union Minister of State for Home Bhanwar Jitendra Singh also visited Bharatpur to meet the families of victims.
