Istanbul: India’s Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde Saturday said that the government is augmenting domestic capacity for building critical and ultra-super critical technologies based power plants to meet the growing need for electricity.
“Domestic capacities for building power plants with super critical and ultra-super critical technologies are being established to reduce the coal requirement of electricity production,” Shinde said in his address to the World Energy Leaders Summit being held here.
According to Shinde, international majors in the electricity sector have set up shop in India and are partnering with domestic players for setting up manufacturing facilities.
“International majors like Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Hitachi, Alstom and Ansaldo have already started the process of partnering with Indian manufacturers to set up super critical manufacturing facilities in India.”
The minister also elaborated on some of the initiatives taken in the field of renewable energy such setting up of a target of 20,000 mega watt (MW) of solar power by 2022.
He added that the state electricity regulatory commissions (SERCs) are mandating a minimum renewable purchase obligations (RPOs) to distribution companies (Discoms) and a mechanism of trading of renewable energy certificates (RECs) through power exchanges has also started working in India.
Shinde is on a visit to Turkey and US to enhance India’s international cooperation in power sector.
