New Delhi : With the violence in Syria escalating and two Indians killed on the Syria-Iraq border, the Indian government Tuesday issued a travel advisory asking Indians to avoid non-essential travel to the Middle East country.
“A tragic incident of May 26, 2012 reportedly involving death of two Indians on the Syria-Iraq border has come to the attention of the government,” the external affairs ministry said here.
“In view of the situation prevailing in Syria, Indian nationals are again advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Syria for the present,” said the ministry.
The situation in Syria has taken a turn for the worse since pro-change protests began against Syrian President Bashar Al Assad in March last year.
More than 100 people, including women and children, were killed Friday in a massacre in Houla, a town near Homs, the hub of the 14-month old protests against Assad. The carnage has triggered global denunciation, with the UN Security Council condemning government forces for shelling residential forces.
Syrian officials have denied any army role in the Friday massacre.
India has opposed external interference and advocated a Syrian-led transition to resolve issues through diplomacy and dialogue.
