His uncle Dharampal, who too was injured in the attack at around 8.30 a.m., was out of danger, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anil Kumar Ojha told IANS.

Bharat Singh, 35, elected from Najafgarh, took a bullet on his left shoulder and another in his abdomen.

The bleeding man was rushed to the Mata Chanan Devi Hospital at Janakpuri where he was immediately wheeled into an operation theatre.

Bharat Singh, police said, was at his office in Sarangpur village when the attack took place.

“Three to four assailants entered the office and fired randomly injuring him critically. After committing the crime, they escaped,” Ojha said.

Police suspect personal enmity may be behind the shooting.

Bharat Singh is the brother of municipal councillor Kishen Pahalwan, who reportedly faces several criminal cases, Ojha said.

The attack came a day after Delhi’s legislators raised the issue of their security in the assembly.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra condemned the attack.

“If an MLA can be shot during the day, it is a very, very serious situation. Delhi has become the crime capital.”
