Mumbai: Maharashtra Monday suspended four policemen and charged them with attempt to murder for extorting money from a businessman and throwing him out of a train, an official said.
The four have also been charged with extortion. The victim, Habibullah Khan, lost his right leg in the incident. Khan said that he paid Rs.10,000 to the policemen.
Home Minister R.R. Patil ordered Railway Police Commissioner Prabhat Kumar to taken stringent action against the four.
They were identified as Shankar S. Patil, Siddhram M. Manganur, Rahul M. Jedhe and Vijay P. Thakur, the official told IANS.
The shocking incident happened Aug 17 when the four policemen picked up Khan from Wadala where he runs a mobile store, a mutton shop and allegedly operated an illegal betting racket.
They took him on a train from Tilak Nagar station and allegedly demanded Rs.2 lakh from him.
When he refused to pay, there was a heated argument. He was flung out of the train shortly after midnight.
Believing him to be dead, the policemen did not report the matter.
However, some passersby saw the seriously injured Khan lying unconscious and arranged to shift him to the Sion Hospital.
Khan regained consciousness after a week (Aug 25) only to find his right leg had been cut off by a train.
He complained to police and identified the four accused.
