Dilip Vengsarkar, who had threatened to quit over the issue of his writing columns in the media and other guidelines issued to the selectors, is now expected to preside over the selection committee meeting to pick the squad for the third Test against Pakistan and also the team for Australia.

Pawar said at a hurriedly convened pres conference here Tuesday that Vengsarkar “as of now remained the chairman of selectors” and issues raised by him could be discussed after the selection of the squad for Australia in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Vengsarkar, who had a meeting with Board’s Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakr Shetty in Mumbai in the afternoon, said he would “take the call” later in the evening.

Pawar also paid a compliment to Vengsarkar saying “he has done a good job as chairman,” and “We want him to prioritise the selection of the team for Australia, all issues can be discussed after that. There is a board meeting on December 16 to discuss the issue of payment for selectors, all issues can be resolved after the selection meeting.”

Vengsarkar had claimed Rs 40 lakh as compensation for the loss he would incur by not writing the columns and he wants the Board to compensate him for it.

The Board rejected his demand, but Pawar today said the amount was quite a big one and agreed that the selectors need to be paid.
