Trinamool leaders responsible for rapes in Bengal: Kabir Suman

Kolkata: In the wake of gangrape of a student allegedly by members of Trinamool Congress’ students wing, the party’s rebel MP Kabir Suman Saturday blamed “irresponsible comments” by the leadership including party supremo Mamata Banerjee for the rising instances of crime in West Bengal.

“I feel the leaders including people like me are responsible for creating a situation where atrocities against women have become common. Instead of calling such incidents as fabricated, we must ponder as to why such things are happening,” said Suman.

Suman was referring to attempts by Banerjee, also the state chief minister, on a few occasions to rubbish the claims of rape by calling them as “fabricated”.

“When a top leader like the chief minister says such a thing it is bound to embolden the miscreants who are present in all political parties. There is now a fear psychosis among the masses. People, especially women, are afraid to wander in the night,” said the acclaimed singer.

He however, refused to blame the Trinamool Congress for the “deteriorating law and order” in the state but held the leadership responsible.

“The normal supporters and workers of the party are not responsible… rather the fault lies with the leaders including people like me, who blame and accuse the media when barbaric events like this happens,” added Suman.

Earlier Friday, a first year polytechnic student from Burdwan district had accused several people including members of the Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad of gang-raping her.
