Embassy spokesman Alexey Bulkin said Ivanova, from Irkutsk in Siberia, would be “required to remain on Thai territory until the end of the investigation and court hearing.”

Bulkin said it was hard to say how long the proceedings would take.

“It is hard to say as [the investigation] is in full swing. So far we cannot say when the trial will take place, or when the case will be completed.”

He said the Embassy was following the situation in cooperation with the local administration and law enforcement bodies.

Ivanova traveled to Thailand on November 19 and was arrested four days later. Police accused her of stealing passports and video cameras from other tourists.

Bulkin said Ivanova’s relatives had paid the bail which was around $12,000.
