Amritsar : Radical Sikh organisation Dal Khalsa has urged Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to do more for the Sikh community since it was a global community, transgressing international borders.
In a memorandum to Harper, who is visiting India, the Dal Khalsa urged him to take up the concerns of Sikhs in India and other places with the government.
Dal Khalsa chief H.S. Dhami said Monday,”Sikh Canadians were proud participants in all walks of Canadian life, impacting the welfare of not only their own community but Canadian society too.”
Dhami regretted that while Canada had responded to concerns of Sikh residing over there, it had largely remained oblivious of human rights violations in India, perhaps in deference to its financial and business interests in this country.
Welcoming Harper on his one-day visit to Punjab, scheduled Nov 7, the Dal Khalsa urged him to have more ties with Punjab in sectors like trade and education.
Canada has a substantial population of migrants from Punjab, especially Sikhs.
