New Delhi: Prominent names from the field of art & literature are receipient of this year’s Padma Awards.
Padma Awards are generally given to Indian citizens to recognize their distinguished contribution in any sphere of activity including Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Games, Sports etc.

Among Muslim who features in this year’s list is France-based artist S. Haider Raza who was given highest award of Padma Vibhushan. Raza was recipient of Padma Bhushan in 2007 and Padma Shri in 1981.
Singer Abdul Rashid Khan of West Bengal is honored with Padma Bhushan award this year. At age 105 he becomes the oldest Padma recipient of all times.
Prof. (Capt.) Dr. Mohammad Sharaf-e-Alam, former Vice-Chancellor of Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic and Persian University of Patna, Bihar wins Padma Shri in the field of Literature & Education.
Famous Urdu poet and Bollywood song-writer Nida Fazli gets Padma Shri. Academician and Prof. of Islamic Studies in Jamia Millia Islamia Akhtarul Wasey also gets Padma Shri.
Freedom fighter and Urdu poet Late Shaukat Riaz Kapoor popularly known as Salik Lakhnawi was honored with Padma Shri award. He passed away on Jan 4th this year at the age of 100.
Other Muslim Padma Shri awardees are Sufi singer Ghulam Mohammad Saznawaz of Jammu and Kashmir and S. Shakir Ali of Rajasthan
The recommendations for Padma Awards are received from the State Governments/Union Territory Administrations, Central Ministries/Departments, Institutions of Excellence, etc. which are considered by an Awards Committee. On the basis of the recommendations of the Awards Committee, and after approval of the Home Minister, Prime Minister and President, the Padma Awards are announced on the eve of the Republic Day.
