The winter storm is “pushing eastward from central plains into northeast US,” it said, adding “the storm is expected to produce heavy snow over the next couple days (from Saturday).”

Storm warnings and watches extended Saturday from Missouri across parts of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, it said.

In Chicago, more than 200 flights were cancelled because of the weather at O’Hare International Airport, and other flights were delayed 30 minutes to an hour.

Snow started to fall across the region on Saturday. Up to 38 cm is expected for some places after last weekend’s storm hit much of the midwestern plains before dumping heavy snow on New England.

The storm killed at least 38, mostly in traffic accident, and cut off power supplies to over a million households, of which some 300,000 were still in blackout.

Officials said the coming storm could complicate efforts to restore power supplies to households and businesses.
