Signatories to Dafur peace agreement ready to implement it

Khartoum : The Sudanese Government and the other parties which signed the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) have re-affirmed their readiness to continue implementation of the clauses of the agreement in a team spirit and collectively to ensure security and stability in whole of Darfur.

The parties agreed at a meeting on the mechanism for the implementation of the Abuja Agreement, headed by the Assistant to the President, Dr. Nafie Ali Nafie, held here Sunday, that some practical steps would be taken soon on the implementation of the clauses that have been reviewed.

Top of the list is the question of security arrangements and the sharing of power and wealth as well as the Darfur-Darfur Dialogue.

The two sides lauded the actions taken so far within the framework of the implementation of the agreement.

On the security arrangements, it was stressed that there was a need to speed up the work of the joint technical committee and for the implementation of practical steps through the executive committees between the commission of the security arrangements on the side of the Armed Forces and the movements which signed the agreement on the other side.

On the Darfur-Darfur dialogue, the two sides agreed to lead consultations via a joint committee on how to give an impetus to the joint dialogue and to issues related to the administrative arrangements.

Dr Mohamed Al Tiganni el Tayeb, the chairman of the higher commission for the implementation of the Abuja Peace Agreement, pointed out in a statement following the meeting that the encounter has brought together representatives of the government of the Sudan and representatives of all movements that have signed the agreement.

He commended the steps taken for the implementation of the agreement and described the implementation so far as appreciable effort.

He said the file of the security arrangements was the spirit of the agreement and that the Darfur-Darfur dialogue was actually the socio-political aspect of the agreement. He said the two sides would work to implement it stressing that the spirit of fruitful dialogue has prevailed during the meeting and that if this spirit continues; it would contribute in the realization of security and stability in the entire region of Darfur.

The representative of the Free Will Movement, Mohamed Abdallah, described the meeting as a practical move for the implementation of the Abuja agreement, commending the reconciliatory spirit that prevailed during the meeting.
