Rome : Prosecutors in the Italian capital are investigating a building administrator for racism after a Bangladeshi shop worker and his family were evicted allegedly over unpaid water bills.
The building administrator in northern Montesacro district reportedly made the 40-year-old Bangladeshi tenant chisel a hole in one of his apartment’s walls and disconnect the main water tap because of water arrears.
After managing for a week with buckets of water drawn from taps in neighbours’ apartments, the Bangladeshi man, his wife and five-year-old daughter were forced to leave the apartment.
The administrator claimed that the Bangladeshi had refused to pay several water bills, but the man’s lawyers said these were left unpaid by the landlord who had previously lived in the apartment.
“For this reason, the sole objective behind the administrator’s behaviour can only have been to evict the foreign citizen and his family,” prosecutors said.
The occupants of other apartments in the building have testified that the administrator made several racist remarks about the family, the prosecutors said.
